EMDR Therapy Allows Clients to Create New Relationships between Movement and Memory

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a treatment modality that is considered to be one of the most effective forms of treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Developed in the late 1980s, EMDR combines psychotherapy with eye movement therapy in order to desensitize the brain to the anxiety brought on by traumatic memories and associations. The application of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy will allow a trauma victim to create a new mental relationship between the memories of the trauma and a healthy way of thinking about the trauma.

What Patients Gain from EMDR Therapy

PTSD Patients who endeavor EMDR therapy will be able to cultivate new and less visceral feelings toward their traumatic experience, further enabling them to properly manage their mental disorder as they live their lives. This reconstructive modality will allow patients to safely recall and discuss their trauma with a minimized risk of episodes that could compromise patient’s progress and general safety. In addition to PTSD, EMDR therapy has also been largely successful in the treatment of depression and other mental disorders.

At the Seaside Center for Women, we apply Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy as an integral methodology for treating women with PTSD. Our treatment is divided into a series of phases, during which the patients problem is identified and a personalized plan is designed and implemented. The final step is re-evaluation to determine the effectiveness of the routine. Studies have shown that EMDR is highly effective at eliminating, or at least negating, the most severe effects of PTSD, even for combat veterans or the victims of multiple traumatic events.
